Project Gallery - Consequence
The idea for the group of paintings - 'Consequence' - came from playing the game of Consequences with our children. > View the work so far... The appeal of this game is in its unpredictable outcome. The game is played by a group of five children who each start by drawing a head, folding their head behind so that their neighbour cannot see what they've done, passing the drawing on to the person next to them and receiving a drawing in turn which they continue with by drawing the next body part (i.e. shoulders). This continues until every child has drawn feet. Each child then reveals the completed drawing to the group. The results can be fascinating as no individual would have created such unusual characters and this provides the group with an opportunity to enjoy teamwork and to celebrate diversity. As artists we are not preoccupied with formal drawing techniques and when the children were drawing we did not discourage them from being free to express themselves and this has led to the children creating drawings which encompass a great breadth of style and imagination. The consequence workshops took place in the first term of our residency (Summer term 2006) with the P6 and P3 year groups. It was our intention to also incorporate the fantasy 'Mini Beasts' that the P2s made in workshops but we have decided that we will be working up these drawings in a different project. From the 150 consequence drawings we then chose 23 characters to work with. In some cases our own A1 drawings have remained quite close to the children's originals, but in others there has been a large departure from the initial consequence character and we have interpreted marks or body parts, made sometimes in haste by a child, and given them fur or changed the colours or texture. The next stage which we are about to embark on is to take eight of these characters as a starting point and paint eight 8' x 5.6' paintings which will be hung in the light well in the front lobby of the school on permanent display. We will create the paintings alone but we will make sure that the children's contribution to this project is reflected nearby to the finished paintings.
