sohail khan - bio
Sohail has been working in theatre since 1985 when he became involved in community based workshops In Huddersfield West Yorkshire and he went on to become a founding member of a local community theatre company based there. Sohail Khan was born in Sidcup Kent in 1966 to German and Pakistani parents. He lived in the south of England until 1983, when he moved with his parents to the Yorkshire town of Huddersfield - where on and off he has lived ever since and which he calls home. Soon after his arrival to Huddersfield he became involved in the local theatre scene, attending workshops and becoming involved in what was then a thriving community theatre arts scene exploring and dealing with the issues of the day. He also attended the (then) local polytechnic drama department for a year were he developed a taste for the creation of new work and beer. After a lot of shilly shallying about (i.e. being made to work in his Dads shop), Sohail was excepted to study Theatre at Dartington College of Arts in Devon - which he did for four years. He specialised in writing for performance and spent his third year attending the international class at the High school of the Arts in Utrecht, Holland - where Sohail developed a taste for movement and dance based theatre and strong coffee. After Graduation from Dartington (with a not so bad 2.1) Sohail went to Moscow to study on the Advanced Actors course at the Central Institute of Cinematography. As well as developing his craft as an actor and the taste for Vodka. Sohail began to collaborate on live arts events - performing them in gallery spaces and at the Institute. Sohail left the institute after 6 months and began to work for an theatre company based in Moscow as a writer and actor for cabaret. On his return to England, Sohail began to work as a freelance theatre arts worker - Which is pretty much the same thing that he does now. Over the years, for his sins, he has done pretty much everything that involves or revolves around the notion of theatre. Currently Sohail is a freelance arts facilitator working with professional arts companies and statutory organisations involved with working with people with learning disabilities and people with established mental health needs. Sohail is also increasingly involved with film - not only for making fictional content, but as a documentary and empowering tool. He is continuing to write for the theatre and has had a number of his plays recently produced. Sohail is a trustee of Artists in Mind (AIM) - a charity which works with people with mental health needs - enabling and encouraging them through the provision of studio space, publications and mentoring to become visual artists in their own right. Sohail is also a mentor for AIM's service user scheme and is also facilitating a film project where the artists on this scheme document and interview each other about their work.
