[ statement - laura drever ]

First and foremost I am a painter of landscape.

I was born and brought up in Orkney. Having studied at Edinburgh College of Art gaining a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting in 2003, I have since returned to Orkney to live and continue to work on my painting.

My work is built around memory of place rather than depiction or illustration. Orkney's changing light, its unique landscapes, its elemental changes coupled with the representation of grassy banks, of water, of reflective skies and outlines of solid ground: These are all factors that are considered when working on each painting of place. These ever-changeable attributes allow me to see each 'place' differently than before: which in turn gives me the opportunity to reconfigure a landscape each time I create a work.

Most of my work is based in the studio; I never draw or paint from subject as I feel this would restrain my initial interpretation of the place. Instead I take a walk, absorb the information that I gather and return to my studio to work on what I have seen. I also use my memory as a sketchbook, remembering aspects of places that I have visited and transferring them onto my canvas.
