. bookmaking workshop
Tuesday, 13th February 2007
Last weekend, Clare and I attended a bookbinding/artists' bookmaking workshop, led by Mike Waight from Peacock Visual Arts (Aberdeen), at Soulisquoy Printmakers in Kirkwall.
After a general introductory talk about artists' books and bookbinding on the Friday evening - we spent a thoriughly enjoyable Saturday and Sunday making books and learning different binding techniques from Mike, with other members of Soulisquoy Printmakers.
We had a go at stab cover and Japanese noble binding techniques, simple stitched pamphlets, long stitch/slotted wrapper booklets and 'piano-hinged' collapsible star books.

. latest additions...
Tuesday, 23rd January 2007
I've just added a few further portfolios to the site - mainly in the drawing and bookworks sections. For now I've been concentrating on getting some recent work onto the site as well as a few pieces of much older work to give an idea of my work over the last 10 years or so.
With an office half-full of drawing books and a hall cupboard and loft stacked with portfolios, I think I have my work cut out over the coming weeks!

. orkney visual arts group: part II
Friday, 19th January 2007
Well we've agreed on a name for the Visual Arts group which myself and a number of other local artists are hoping to establish soon in Orkney.
After a lot of good suggestions we finally chose 'untitled' as a name for the group - or at least a working title for the time being.
untitled
Orkney Visual Arts Group
There were lots of great names suggested by everyone involved - but we couldn't agree unanimously about any - until suddenly, in a meeting the other day, the slightly ironic word 'untitled' appeared and we all agreed.
We are sending out letters soon to visual artists locally who we feel will be interested in the idea of a progressive, constituted, professional visual arts group - and hopefully then we can all meet and elect a committee to take the project forward.
We've even registered a domain name and setup an email address - which will be info@untitledvisualarts.org.uk

. orkney visual arts group: part I
Monday, 15th January 2007
After a recent trip to the Highlands and Islands Visual Arts Gathering in Ullapool, a group of artist friends and myself are looking into establishing a visual arts group in Orkney.
We're currently working on a name for the group (which is harder than we thought) and have put together an information and invitation to join letter, which we'll be circulating around Orkney in the coming few weeks.
We felt that there was an absence of a constituted, artist led collective representing aspects of the visual arts locally - particularly those not primarily of a commercial nature and which may be of a more experimental, research focussed, conceptual or collaborative type.
I'll post any updates to progress and further information on this blog in due course.

. welcome to rikhammond.com
Saturday, 13th January 2007
Welcome to rikhammond.com!
I'll be using this news and blog page to keep you up to date with my recent work - as well as projects I'm involved with. Hopefully it will also give you an insight into how I approach my artwork and the subjects which interest me as a visual artist.
I've just started redeveloping the website - which will eventually include a range of artwork, including drawing, painting, collage, photography, digital, bookworks and work in other media, such as time-based action and installation - so some of the sections will be empty until I get some content scanned and uploaded.
Cheers,
Rik
