. about rik hammond

rik hammond . artist . orkney

I am a visual artist based in Orkney - the group of islands which lie off the northernmost tip of Scotland.

I work in a range of media - including painting and drawing, collage, print, bookworks, digital media, mail art, film, photography and occasionally with time-based action, intervention work and site specific media.

The majority of my work is conceptual and experimental in nature and abstract and minimal in style, although I often implement traditional drawing and painting materials and techniques. Extended work statement...

I have a particular interest in art and research and collaborative and networking based artforms.

I am also interested in exploring the nature, meaning and production - and the mechanisms of 'reading' - visual art and enjoy examining the role of the artist, audience, participant and curator.

I also produce artwork within a collaborative, called ussr1049, and am the Director and Co-Curator of The Peedie Gallery - the art gallery in a shoebox.

Since 1996 I have also been a freelance website designer. I run watson press website design & authoring - specialising in bespoke, creative website design and ICT consultancy - and I am also the founder and a Senior Associate of digitalORKNEY.

I co-edit sucking mud - an irregularly published visual arts and poetry pamphlet and am a partner in a creative management consultancy, 59north.

I was born in Hastings, East Sussex, in 1969 and after studying Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art & Design in Cornwall (1989 - 1992) I moved to Hartlepool, in the North East of England, with my partner and fellow artist Clare Gee.

In April 2004, we relocated to Orkney. We live very near the sea in the small village of St. Margaret's Hope, in South Ronaldsay, with our two cats and our chickens.
