Boots of Spanish plastic?
“Grey market” and bootleg CDs are never sold by High St retailers in England. You used to be able to buy interesting stuff in Germany and Italy, but the supply there seems to have dried up.
I’d assumed it was due to the EU harmonising copyright law throughout Europe. And then, lo and behold, while in Sevilla, Spain, on a jolly last weekend, I picked up Bob Dylan: Seleccion 5 Estrellas, a 30 track double CD, for £4, at El Cortes Ingles, the country’s best-known retail chain.
The album’s an intriguing mixture – most of the tracks are taken straight from the great 1960s Columbia albums, and they’re mixed in with about 10 “audience recordings”, including such semi-rarities as Candy Man, Poor Lazarus and Baby Please Don’t Go – all credited, incidentally, to Bob Dylan! It’s worth having, at the price, as a memento of a visit to a fabulous city and region, if not for the content.
But what’s going on? Are Dylan grey market/bootleg CDs still widely available in Spanish retail outlets?
