Raving about Modern Times: looking on in awe…

Why bother writing your own review when you receive one from a trusted friend with sound judgment who’s forgotten more about Dylan than you’ll ever know?

Here’s the respected Bernard McGuinn's early review of Modern Times, which went on sale in England this morning:

“I had serious concerns, after hearing a couple of tracks on the radio last week, that Bob might be going the way of Picasso in his later years.

“I needn't have worried!

"Modern Times is a mighty fine album, with at least four standout - and stand up - songs. Workingman's Blues #2 is a masterpiece, up there alongside the countless hundreds of great songs already given to us by this genius. This one song is enough to make anyone want to go out to buy the new album straight away!

“It is reminiscent, in its own unique 21st century way, of the ‘60s and early ‘70s stuff. With some Hammond organ, that song could drop straight onto Highway 61, or Blonde on Blonde. Just imagine that!

“Which raises the question yet again: how does he keep up that level of creativity? He's 65 years old for Christ's sake! We can only look on in awe. Imagine what the world would have missed if he'd gone the way of several of his drug/drink-ravaged contemporaries… .”
