Superlative new Rolling Stone interview
It’s a few years since a Rolling Stone cover story seemed like an event in these parts, but I’ll be hot-footing it down to Borders for the new ("Sept 7") issue, whose superlative Dylan photo cover announces a major feature, The Genius Of Bob Dylan: An Intimate Conversation, by Jonathan Lethem.
Even the online sampler is packed with gems.
Just try these for starters: (Dylan is) “a sixty-five-year-old with a nineteen-year-old cavorting somewhere inside”; “three albums into a Dylan renaissance… grounded in a knowledge of the blues built from the inside out”; “nourishment from the root cellar of American cultural life…” and, perhaps most controversially, “this is the best band I’ve ever had…”.
There’ll be a mountain of press for Modern Times, but Rolling Stone has already set the benchmark.
