I’ve got the live show blues
I missed the latest UK Bobgigs because I’ve grown sick and tired of trying to listen to great music in awful arena venues which are conspiracies against musical enjoyment.
Listening to a friend’s audience recording of a recent show reminded me of the other reason for avoiding many rock gigs – the audiences.
The recording is a pretty faithful sonic reproduction of what was coming from the stage. Unfortunately, it’s also a faithful reproduction of what must have been assailing the taper’s (and everyone else’s) ears: countless boneheads chatting inconsequentially, loudly, persistently; a couple of nearby lunatics singing along with Bob; and a deeply unattractive jerk who insisted on yelling childish homilies every five minutes.
They wouldn’t tolerate this crap in the Royal Opera House. I sometimes wonder whether attendance at rock gigs – Dylan’s included – is really worth the effort.
