Last night’s Cardiff show

Thanks to Peter Williams:

“Last night wasn’t the best Cardiff gig I’ve seen, but it was pretty strong, despite the venue.

“The set list was heavy on Dylan’s golden period, the mid-1960s. Highlights for me were the duo of tender love songs, Girl Of The North Country and Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right. Both demonstrated Dylan’s greatness, both as songwriter and interpreter. The more recent material, even the tedious Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, came across surprisingly well.

“Vocally, Dylan engaged with the material, delivering some fine performances. I wish he’d give the keyboard a rest. The band was intermittently compelling; when they drifted a bit, Tony Garnier pulled them back.

“However much those people who attend far too many shows might whine about it, Dylan is astute in sticking with the customary firestorm finale, Like A Rolling Stone and All Along The Watchtower: both are perfect closers for a rock gig.

“Wish I was going on to Bournemouth tonight.”
