Dylan launches new European tour with two weekend Irish shows
Thanks to readers Mary Wogan for her review of Saturday’s Kilkenny concert, and Sean McAvennie for his note on yesterday’s Cork gig.
Mary Wogan:
“Dylan's Nowlan Park gig in Kilkenny was, I think a definite success for him. Although his voice wobbled a bit in the opening numbers, Maggie's Farm and She Belongs To Me, by the end of the show he sounded terrific and was absolutely great singing encores Like A Rolling Stone and All Along The Watchtower.
“In fact, the show was really getting going nearer the end and Dylan and co could probably have played for another hour, if they’d wanted.
“I love the way Dylan sang Lay Lady Lay, with the lyrics - "You can eat your cake and have it too." Masters of War sounded like an entirely different tune, only recognisable by the lyrics. Love Sick was memorable, and I like the inclusion of Absolutely Sweet Marie and Ballad Of A Thin Man soared.
“With everyone dressed in black, it was hard to see the band members and Bob as well as I would have liked, but with the aid of binoculars I did get to see him, a boyish figure with an aging face - a black cowboy hat propped on his head. (It's a pity there were no screens at the side of the stage.)
“It was a well-organised, professional show, with Dylan obviously pleased with the reception he got from the packed-out football pitch. It was obvious, too, that everyone was there to see Dylan alone, and although The Flaming Lips, for instance, were excellent they seemed to take this good-naturedly, even dedicating a song to Bob.
“He said, "Thank you very much" and something else I couldn’t make out, before introducing the band in his new DJ Bob voice. Then they took a bow and filed off stage.
“Contrary to what The Flaming Lips lead singer said earlier in their set, Michael Jackson did not appear, at least not on the Kilkenny stage!
“Is Dylan the coolest person on earth? Yes, probably.”
Sean McAvennie:
“Yesterday’s Cork big tent gig was all right: decent set list, Dylan in good voice. But there was little of the excitement I’ve felt at my 20-odd other Dylan gigs. And I’m not too keen on this band.
“Worth going? Certainly - if only to pay homage. But a mediocre musical outing for me.”
