Disappointing showing in NME poll of top 100 albums - encore
Thanks to Tom Townsend:
“With reference to the NME list of greatest albums: more lists condemn Dylan to the lower half of the 100. Channel 4’s poll of greatest music videos had the Dylan entry at number 66 (subterranean homesick blues). Music channel VH1 rated a lyric from the U2 song One as far greater than the opening lines to subterranean homesick blues, down at 17. Surely what hurt most is that ABBA were in at number 12!
“The most damning evidence that the general public have no taste is surely the fact that Bob has been deprived of that coveted number one spot in the singles charts, where other, less deserving, acts have made it (none spring to mind quicker than Mr. Blobby in 1993.)
“There are many, many more lists where Dylan goes unrecognised, but perhaps it's for the best; had Bob experienced more commercial success it would have detracted from the music he wrote.
“I think it was David Hyde Pierce who said ‘Popularity is the hallmark of mediocrity’. “
