Hibbing celebrations for Dylan’s 65th birthday
Hibbing, Minnesota, Dylan’s childhood home, can’t get that many tourists. It’s Nowehereville, on the road from Nowhere to, er, Nowhere. Dylan is the only reason 99.9% of people will have even heard of the town.
Local non-profit body Dylan Days, in cahoots with the Hibbing Area Chamber of Commerce, is gradually changing all that, with its wholly commendable fourth annual Dylan Days fest, to be held next week, May 24-27, to celebrate the famous son's 65th birthday.
The exciting Dylan Days 2006 programme includes:
* Blood On The Tracks Live – a gig by the band who recorded on Dylan’s best-selling (and best-loved) album, including Kevin Odegard, who wrote the definitive book on the subject.
* Creative Writing Contest
* a screening of Tangled Up In Bob, a film investigating Dylan’s time in Hibbing
* singer-songwriter contest, at Zimmy’s Bar and Restaurant.
If I was going to be anywhere near the US North Country next week, I’d sure be heading up to Hibbing, MN.
