Dylan and…
What do they of Dylan know, who only Dylan know?
Writers who can convincingly place Dylan in context – both of his musical and literary antecedents and of an evolving America – are not exactly ten a penny. But, ever grateful to anyone who enriches my Dylan understanding, I routinely raise a metaphorical glass when experts share their knowledge and perceptions on such matters.
Searching my file of Judas!, the Dylan quarterly, for some Easter holiday stimulation, I was pleased to see that Editor Andrew Muir appears to agree – he has published numerous “Dylan and…” articles in the magazine’s 16 issues.
Articles I’m looking forward to reading slowly over the holiday weekend include:
Number 1, April 2002 Bow Down To Her On Sunday, by John Gibbens (The Tarot in Dylan’s canon) Me and Mrs Jones – Bob Dylan And The Revolution, by Peter Doggett
Number 3, October 2002 Can’t Let Go No More, by Markus Prieur (Gospel) And The Art Of Blackface Minstrelsy, by Richard Jobes
Number 5, April 2003 A Man Of Constant Sorrow, by Robert Forryan (Appalachian music) Prophesizing With Pens, by Alan Davis (CS Lewis approach to criticism)
Number 6, July 2003 ‘Deep River’, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty And The Negro Spiritual, by Richard Jobes
Number 7, October 2003 The Ghosts Of Minneapolis, by Leonard Scott Bob Dylan And ‘The Nature Of Gothic’, by Alan Davies Holding Up A Mirror To Nature: Bob Dylan And Marlon Brando, by Nick Hawthorne
That’ll be more than enough for one sitting: second list to follow.
