Invisible Republic – Greil Marcus on Dylan’s old, weird America
I always had mixed feelings about Invisible Republic, Greil Marcus’s study of the Basement Tapes. Enviably well-informed: yes. Well-researched scholarship: check. But, because of some overwritten, impenetrable prose, I didn’t really get into it until the third attempt. Then I finally got it, and it revealed itself as one of the great Dylan books.
Checking out Marcus’s chapter on Harry Smith’s Anthology Of American Folk Music, covered yesterday, sealed it – it has all you’ll ever need (except a track list).
Kudos Greil Marcus’s Invisible Republic: its riches repay the effort.
