Oh No! Not Another Bob Dylan Book
Having ignored it on publication – probably agreeing with the title’s sentiment - last week I finally got my hands on a copy of Oh No! Not Another Bob Dylan Book.
Patrick Humphries’ text, to p168, still reads well, though some copy (eg Judas! at the “Royal Albert Hall” gig in 1966) has been overtaken by subsequent revelations.
Humphries’ list of Dylan firsts, on page 10 – first …to make pop lyrics matter; folk-rocker; to undermine 3 min pop song; rock poet embraced by literary establishment; to be bootlegged; to commission rock cinema verite… - is impressive.
And John Bauldie’s Notes, pp169-239, give a useful year-by-year account of what Dylan was up to every year from 1961 to mid-1991. Each year has a Chronology, Concerts, Bibliography, Songs written, and Discography, all in year-by-year sections.
An extensive, varied range of photos, including Columbia/CBS stock shots, enriches the book, though there’s nothing by the recognised classic photographers. The colour plates on pp97-136, including tempting photos of collages of rarities, will cause Dylan collectors to salivate uncontrollably.
There’s only one significant weakness in a product I now wish I’d bought on publication, weak design – A4 is simply the wrong size.
Not Another Dylan book? Little did they know…
Humphries, P and Bauldie, J, Oh No! Not Another Bob Dylan Book. Square One Books, 1991. (Patrick Humphries (text) and John Bauldie (notes)).
It’s long out of print but you can pick it up second hand for about £20.
