Rimbaud and Dylan: encore
Pursuing the Rimbaud theme – trying to understand how, exactly, the French icon might have influenced Dylan, I came across a fine article on that very topic in a recent issue of Judas!
Dylan’s and Rimbaud’s Wounded Shoes and Bare Feet (Judas! number 15, October 2005) is an informative, well-written study in which Guido Bieri takes as his starting point Dylan’s reference in Chronicles to the Nineteenth Century poet.
After investigating the debt owed to Rimbaud’s work by the lyrics of several Dylan compositions, notably Chimes Of Freedom, Bieri points out other commonalities: sympathy for the outlaw; rebellion against conformity; creative use of mind-altering substances, and, especially, “poetry as a radical way of life rather than a cultural artefact”.
Bieri’s excellent article is highly recommended.
