Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid – new DVD version
Many aficionados are salivating at the forthcoming release (August, UK) of the 2 Disc Special Edition of Sam Peckinpah’s epic western, Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid, with Dylan playing the bit part of Alias.
The new DVD is already available in the USA, but in the UK the film has so far been seen only in the 1973 theatre version. The new release has a 2005 cut, intercutting the 1973 version with an allegedly superior 1988 cut.
Even the much maligned cinema version, as originally released, is a favourite in this parish. An elegaic mood piece, documenting the end of an era, it’s one the very finest Westerns.
Apart from the appropriately celestial Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, Dylan’s haunting soundtrack, was – nay, still is - largely ignored. But it’s a well-nigh perfect accompaniment to a fine movie. It retails at £4.99 in London: I’d be hard pushed to think of a better bargain.
If you haven’t played the Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid CD recently, and you owe yourself a favour…
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) Billy (Main Title Theme); Cantina Theme (Workin’ for the Law); Billy Bunkhouse Theme; River Theme; Turkey Chase; Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door; Final Theme; Billy 4; Billy 7
