Encore: Red Sky, The Dead and Q mag
Thanks to Bernard McGuinn for his comments on Under The Red Sky and Dylan And The Dead, and Mary Wogan for her note on the Q mag Dylan cover issue.
Bernard:
“Interesting stuff from John Hinchey re. Red Sky, which I think is a hugely under-rated album. But I've never heard it as this nursery rhyme stuff that some espouse.
“The thought of the dirty old man playing with kids in Wiggle Wiggle is much closer to the darker images I hear when playing it. To say it's better than Oh Mercy is a very unusual and thought-provoking statement. I certainly don't share that map of the Dylan universe, but to each his own, it's all unknown, as someone once said on another maligned and under-rated album!
“And you are at your provocative best with your Dylan/Dead piece. Are you on medication?
“You home in on what, I agree, is easily the best performance on the album, Queen Jane, but to suggest that Bob displays any real artistry, or even enthusiasm, on the rest of the tracks, is a very surprising viewpoint. To me, even the Dead struggle to break into a sweat over these songs.”
Mary:
“Further to the Q magazine debate, I look on it as homage to an artist who had been, to some extent, out in the wilderness for a long while, before Time Out Of Mind, Chronicles and the like.
“Of course, this is a reminder of the media's influence on the general public. When they said Dylan was an old has-been in the eighties, was there anyone who, because their age meant they had missed Dylan's youthful golden heyday, didn’t believe them?
“I think Q’s is a good tribute, with interesting pictures. They knew something about him - for instance, in relation to his appearance in the ad for Victoria's Secret, they quite rightly made reference to his interview in San Francisco in '65, when he was asked what he would sell out for and he replied "ladies’ garments" (though they said "undergarments").
“So they want to sell magazines? That's their business, isn’t it?”
