The Bootleg Series volume 8? Last word on Dylan’s Gospel Era
Thanks to Martin Cowan for the last word (for now) on Dylan’s “Gospel” phase: “Further to Tom Townsend's latest, I think Dylan's Gospel period is ripe for reassessment. While people may not appreciate the subject matter, creatively he was on fire during this period. As well as the three so-called Gospel albums, there were a large number of other songs which he performed live at this time.
“Hopefully Sony will issue a Bootleg Series volume covering these years to better represent his achievements between 1979 and 1981.
“I would have to disagree with Tom's comment that the ‘instrumental parts are not up to scratch’, as I think the music on these albums, particularly Slow Train Coming and Saved, is some of the richest and most unusual of Dylan's career.
“In The Garden is not like any other Dylan song, musically speaking, and I just love the way Pressing On builds and builds. While these albums certainly did not have the impact of the early classics, they contain moments of brilliance.”
