Another Bob Dylan Encyclopedia
While praising Keys To The Rain: The Definitive Bob Dylan Encyclopedia last week as “an invaluable listening companion…a treasure trove of factual data on the albums, songs and musicians making up the Dylan story”, I also pointed out that “Bob Dylan’s Songs would be a more accurate title – the book doesn’t deal with people, places and events in the same detail (as the songs).”
Little did I know that Michael Gray’s forthcoming Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, due to be published by Continuum in June this year, covers exactly those topics neglected by Trager.
Gray’s 850 entries focus on people – Al Aronowitz; themes – American Civil War; musicians – The Animals, as well as the albums and a small selection of songs.
So, although they’ll have almost identical titles, these two major reference books will be complementary. Good news for serious fans, most of whom will have both titles on their Dylan shelf.
