Dylan encyclopedia
Keys To The Rain: The Definitive Bob Dylan Encyclopedia is an invaluable listener's companion. It’s a treasure trove of factual data on the albums, songs, and musicians in the Dylan catalogue. The bulk of the book - and the work’s particular strength - are the short essays on the 700-plus songs Dylan has recorded or performed.
In fact, Bob Dylan’s Songs would be a more accurate title – the book doesn’t deal with people, places and events in the same detail. You might get less breadth than you’d expect from an encyclopedia, but the book’s depth, and its sheer amount of detail, are impressive. So, for example, if you want to check the background to Lay Down Your Weary Tune, the classic ballad on the recent Carnegie Hall 1963 CD - release history, covers, context, interpretation, evaluation etc – Oliver Trager’s your man.
Keys To The Rain: highly recommended - your Dylan library is incomplete without it.
