Down In The Groove: Dylan for Downloaders 3
When did you last listen to Down In The Groove? Not for some considerable time, if you’re a typical Dylan fan.
Released in 1988, after an extended fallow spell, Down In The Groove is seen by many as the nadir of Dylan’s recorded output. ‘Some very ordinary Dylan originals, surrounded by uninspired covers,’ was the critical consensus.
But, like most rejected Dylan albums, Down In The Groove does contain several classic recordings. I could live without tracks like Silvio (though Bob doesn’t seem able to), but if I were to select tracks for downloading or compiling a cassette (remember them?) for the car, I’d welcome aboard one outstanding and three engaging tracks:
· Death Is Not The End – a great Dylan song · Ninety Miles An Hour (Down A Dead End Street) · Shenandoah · Rank Strangers To Me.
Like several other weaker Dylan releases, Down In The Groove might not work as an album, but it has some hidden gems.
