Gospel Dylan
The impending release of the DVD ‘Gotta Serve Somebody: the Gospel Songs Of Bob Dylan’, including previously unreleased live footage of a Bible-bashing Bob in full flow, notably on a performance of ‘When He Returns’, will cause mixed feelings among the Zim faithful.
The DVD version of the 2003 album, starring Shirley Caesar and Aaron Neville, which received two GRAMMY nominations, will interest those wishing to re-evaluate the controversial era. But, for many, the music – by Dylan and a cast of African American god-spellers – will be about as welcome as toothache.
The memory, not so much of Dylan’s conversion, but of his hitting LP buyers and live audiences over the head with it, still rankles with many. The Gospel period led them to bin Dylan – some for several years, some permanently.
Gospel Dylan? No thanks: great voice, but pity about much of the set list, and the strident performances.
