The Bootleg Series: official? Worthwhile?
Reader Geordie Hinchliffe, “a recent Dylan convert”, asks whether The Bootleg Series albums are official, and whether they’re worth buying.
Yes, and absolutely, George. Do bears sh*t in the woods?
Dylan’s record label, Columbia, have now issued five different albums under The Bootleg Series banner, presumably to claw back some of the revenue that was being cornered by real bootleggers.
The Bootleg Series volumes 1-3 is a 3CD release of priceless out-takes. Some people regard it as the best Dylan release of all. Vols 4, 5 and 6 are 2CD releases of Dylan concerts – from 1966, 1975 and 1964, respectively. Vol 7 is the soundtrack to the recent No Direction Home film. They’re all essential. All except vol 7 are usually available at discount.
I recently saw an attractive offer in The Guardian newspaper, offering the complete set, vols 1-7 (ie 5 releases, 11 CDs), at the attractive price of £75 inc post/packing. A perfect present for a new Dylan fan.
