Girl From The North Country: the best recent Dylan cover?

I don’t usually bother listening to covers of Dylan songs, generally preferring to hear the Zim originals - part of Dylan’s attraction is his singing and playing.

When someone bought me A Nod To Bob, a “60th birthday tribute”, featuring a collection of overly precious covers, I listened once before promptly donating it to my favourite charity shop.

So it came as a surprise that, among much avoidable dross, Dylan Covered, the mid-2005 MOJO cover-mount CD, contained one outstanding cover version. Girl From The North Country, the last track of 15, features an explosive performance from a trio including Conor Oberst, the richly talented young artist who normally fronts the band Bright Eyes.

Oberst’s poignant live take on North Country is a must-listen. His explosive entry, as second voice, on “If you go…”, was one of the musical highlights of 2005.
