Dylan: The Musical!
Yesterday’s news that The Times They Are A-Changin’, a musical based on Dylan’s work, is due to open in San Diego on 25 January was a complete surprise.
It shouldn’t have been. The massively successful Mamma Mia (Abba) and We Will Rock You (Queen) are merely the best known of a whole genre of singalong shows based on popular musicians.
But there must be doubts about Dylan: The Musical’s commercial prospects. Perhaps Dylan’s art is too heavy for the middle-to-lowbrow crowd that patronises musical theatre? You can’t imagine a musical based on the work of a serious artist like Miles Davis or Arthur Rimbaud. So why Dylan? We shall see.
You couldn’t pay me to see a confection like Dylan: The Musical! but good luck to the promoters.
