Dylan and Charles Dickens?

Anne Ritchie writes:

“Has Dylan read Bleak House?

"Going straight from reading Chronicles Volume One to Charles Dickens’s classic, Bleak House, I was struck by the similarity of an arresting image that Dylan might have (subconsciously?) borrowed from that other Mr D - an author Dylan mentions as having read.

“A memorable passage in Chronicles is Dylan’s account of receiving an honorary degree from Princeton. His seething anger at still being referred to as the ‘disturbed conscience of Young America’ is so intense that he says he ‘wanted to bite myself’.

“In Bleak House, a nameless old lady the heroine meets at a dancing class run by Mr Turveydrop’s son is so incensed at the bumptious father’s mistreatment of his put-upon son that her tirade against him ends with the heartfelt frustration, ‘O…I could bite you’.

“The heroine is both amused and concerned by the old lady’s vehemence, much as I was by Dylan’s.”
