Bob Dylan 1975-81 – Rolling Thunder and the Gospel Years: new unauthorised DVD
Bob Dylan 1975-81 – Rolling Thunder and the Gospel Years is the latest in a trilogy of unauthorised DVD documentaries produced/directed by Joel Gilbert.
Featuring TV clips from live shows, interviews with Dylan associates of the time (Rob Stoner, Scarlett Rivera et al), photos and specially shot documentary sequences, the four hour programme “contains no Bob Dylan songs”. Music is provided by said associates, plus Highway 61 Revisited, a tribute band.
Not having seen the DVD yet, I can’t comment on its quality. But I’m slightly puzzled as to why the makers have rolled two distinct Dylan phases into one. (If you see the DVD before it’s reviewed here, why not share your opinions with other readers of The Dylan Daily?)
Bob Dylan 1975-81 – Rolling Thunder and the Gospel Years follows two earlier unauthorised Joel Gilbert DVDs, Bob Dylan 1966 World Tour: The Home Movies (Mickey Jones), 2004, and Bob Dylan Tours 1966-1974 Through the Camera of Barry Feinstein, 2005. The surging interest in all things Dylan has created a demand for new product, both official and unofficial, in all formats – audio CD, DVD, books and magazines. Yeah, even web sites. You can expect to see yet more… watch this space…
