Lavish new Dylan book makes the perfect Xmas present
Dylan – Visions, Portraits & Back Pages, despite the clumsy title and the prominent “Foreword By Bono” flash on the front cover, makes a perfect Xmas present for the Dylan fan in your life.
Based on articles appearing over the years in Heritage Rock monthly MOJO and sister kiddypoprock mag Q, bolstered by some new pieces, it’s a lavishly illustrated examination of the art of Bob. The cover design, based on an iconic photo from 1966, makes it the most striking Dylan book of the hundreds currently available: it will stop you in your tracks.
Some strong writers – Charles Shaar Murray, Andy Gill, Stuart Bailie - are complemented by some of the great Dylan photographers – Daniel Kramer, Jerry Schatzberg and Don Hunstein – in a beautifully produced book which will be welcomed by seasoned aficionado and newer, younger Zimfan alike.
Nits to pick? Very few. Scratching around a bit… the ink colours on a few pics in my copy are a bit too red; and the ink stinks. That’s all. This is a humdinger. And it’s a snip, too: list price £18.99, though some UK retailers – HMV and Maher, for example – are already discounting it to £14.99.
Dylan – Visions, Portraits & Back Pages, edited by Mark Blake, Dorling Kindersley, in association with MOJO, 2005, 288pp, hardback. ISBN 1-4053-1393-5
