Final London show - 50th different song of the five-night residency

Warmest thanks to Phil Davis for his tireless reporting of the five London shows this week. His expert reports have been invaluable in helping launch The Dylan Daily. “Respect!” as the Guardian journalist wrote of Phil on Wednesday.

“Well, Dylan has gone, off to the last two shows of the European tour, in Dublin. In five London shows, Dylan performed 50 different songs (in a total of 87). Everyone got something from this splendid run; I enjoyed every night and I`m already looking forward to Bob`s next UK shows!

“Last night - Thanksgiving Day and the final show of the Brixton run - we were expecting something extra special. Though the hardcore were disappointed that we didn't get Turkey Chase or Highlands, the casuals I spoke to afterwards really enjoyed the show.

“Maggie`s Farm, the standard opener, began the evening, followed by two new songs for Brixton, Tonight I`ll Be Staying Here With You, and I`ll Be Your Baby Tonight, the only time we had the centre stage harp.

“It looked like we were going to get the Country and Western show, but Bob went into It`s Alright Ma, and Positively 4th Street, both superbly executed, followed by Down Along The Cove, Girl From The North Country (with banjo backing) and High Water (For Charley Patton). Just Like A Woman, with the audience’s screamed accompaniment in the chorus, and a rocking version of Highway 61 provided a solid mid-‘60s core. Every Grain Of Sand (yet another new Brixton song) was sung really nicely. Honest With Me had the normal fast-paced backing. Sugar Baby was the evening’s highlight.

“Summer Days signalled the end of the main set. After the band had soaked up the thunderous applause, in the usual formation, with Bob holding two harps in the middle of the stage, the Brixton residency ended with another performance of London Calling (one verse plus chorus), Like A Rolling Stone, and All Along The Watchtower.

“I`d like to pay a warm tribute to the band - Tony Garnier on bass, George Recile on drums, Donnie Herron on steel guitar, banjo, violin and mandolin, and Stu Kimball and Denny Freeman on guitar. And to Bob Dylan, of course, for five nights of great music.”
