London, Wednesday: yet more rarities and another world debut

Many thanks, once again, to Phil Davis for his well-informed report of last night’s London show:

“Bob Dylan is still keeping us on our toes: after a very impressive set, he and the band returned for the encore. Expecting to hear the opening riff to Like A Rolling Stone, we were treated instead to the Fats Domino song, Blue Monday: yet another world debut. Just why he decided to sing it, only Bob knows. New Orleans, perhaps?

“What a variety of material the London serial attenders have been treated to: with four of the five Brixton nights gone, only two numbers have been common to all the shows.

“Last night started with Rumble and Maggie`s Farm, as the night before, and then, for only the second time on this European tour, a really nice version of She Belongs To Me. Cry A While followed, and then Shelter From The Storm, one of only two mid-late ‘70s songs I can recall from the Brixton run. The audience was mesmerised by this relative rarity. Next up - Down Along The Cove, the normal pacy version, and then the second Positively 4th Street of successive nights - slightly better than Tuesday’s, with the vocals well up in the mix.

“High Water (For Charley Patton), another welcome first for the run, followed by a rocking Most Likely You Go Your Way, which I loved. Another rarity, Million Miles, came next, then into Stuck Inside Of Mobile.

“Slowing down, Dylan performed a magnificent Hard Rain, maybe one of the first songs of the gig that casual concertgoers would have been expecting to hear.

“Honest With Me began the final run-in, followed by a superb The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll – a word-perfect rendition, with Bob giving it everything.

“As Summer Days ended the main set, we set ourselves for the usual finale - Like A Rolling Stone and Watchtower. But, wait - what are those opening notes, I wondered? Nothing less than the world debut of the Fats Domino song, Blue Monday (I`d always called it Saturday Morning!), followed by two of the regular closers.

“All in all, another wonderful night from the man who can throw in almost anything he wants and still get rapturous applause. And don’t you just love these world debuts.”
