Dylan in London, Monday 21 November: three world debuts
Many thanks to Phil Davis for his report on last night’s show.
“London, 21 November: another top notch show, with no fewer than three world debuts. Bob must love London town.
“Debuts tonight: Million Dollar Bash, Waitin’ For You, and one verse plus chorus of ...London Calling. I can`t get over what I have just seen and heard - this show will stay etched firmly in the memory for a long time.
“Rumble started the show once again, with a quick burst of the Link Wray song, then Maggie`s Farm was belted out superbly, before it slowed down to an engaging The Times They Are A-Changin`, with the centre stage harp solo.
“Million Dollar Bash was a stunner, with words and phrasing both hitting the mark. It`s Alright, Ma was the first duplicate from Sunday (not counting instrumentals). A jazz-lounge version of Moonlight was followed by Down Along The Cove and Boots of Spanish Leather, with the crowd ecstatic at the final line. Cold Irons Bound was well done, and a quite lovely Mr Tambourine Man followed.
The only lowlight of the night was Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum. I wish he’d cut that now - it`s well past its sell-by date. A lovely Visions of Johanna put the show back on track, and then Honest With Me.
“The second live debut of the night was Waitin’ For You (from the soundtrack of The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood). The Bobcats went wild when they recognised it, and it was sung to perfection. Highway 61 was the final song before the encore, but what came next had the faithful and the casuals going even wilder.
“London Calling! The Clash anthem: a most unexpected collector’s item. But was it a tribute to Joe Strummer, or a hymn to the city Dylan’s found himself in so often during his long and winding career?
“Like A Rolling Stone, with the house lights on the crowd for the chorus, then band intro, and finally All Along the Watchtower....
“Three London nights to go. What other aces does Dylan have up his sleeve? My tips for Tuesday: John Brown and Masters of War.”
