London, show 1, Sunday 20 November
Many thanks to Phil Davis for his report on last night’s show.
“London, Sunday 20 November: what a show, packed full of highlights.
“A strange start, with a short, unknown instrumental, later identified as Rumble by Link Wray, who died over the weekend. Then we got Drifter’s Escape, a magnificent Senor, and God Knows – widely expected, as Bob has sung this at every Sunday show this year.
“A beautiful rendition of To Ramona followed. Bob`s voice didn`t falter. It`s Alright Ma, and a stunning Queen Jane proved Bob was on top form, and no sign yet of what some Bob fans are starting to call "upsinging" - where he raises his voice on the last note of each line. A rearrangement of `Til I Fell In Love With You was so different to the original that I thought it was going to be High Water!
“Stuck Inside of Mobile brought the first example of the aforementioned “upsinging”, but it wasn’t excessive. New Morning, Highway 61 and Long Black Coat were the next three gems, all masterful versions, with Bob harp soloing centre stage during the last one.
“After Honest With Me, I knew there were four songs left, but which song would be number 13? Then the opening chords to the masterpiece Desolation Row rang through the Academy, and what a version it was! We got all 10 verses, including Nero`s Neptune, which Bob has always missed whenever I've seen this one before.
“Summer Days, then the band formation, and gone.....we knew he would be back, with Rolling Stone, or Don`t Think Twice. We got the latter, and again, it was far, far better than I expected after reading the reviews from mainland Europe. Watchtower, and off.
“If you have a ticket for any of the other shows at Brixton, enjoy. If you could possibly get there, but don’t yet have a ticket, you are advised to try very, very hard to get one...”
