London, Sunday night

Many thanks to Arthur Dodds for his report on tonight’s London show:

“After a big build-up, expectations for tonight’s gig – the first of five shows at Brixton Academy - were running very high. Dylan has already done four good shows in the UK, with favourable reviews and set lists that seemed to be picked just for me.

“And the listed (Grade 2) Art Deco Brixton Academy is one of the most attractive music venues in London – it won the NME award in 2005 for “London’s Best Venue”. A perfect place, then, for Dylan’s dates in the capital.

“The show opened with the instrumental “Rumble”, then a blasting Drifter’s Escape and straight into Senor - another change to the expected set list, as the shows last week had Maggie’s Farm as the opener of choice.

“Ramona was haunting, every word clearly audible, as the band played delicately around Dylan’s vocals. A highlight for me was Queen Jane. Firstly because it was unexpected, and secondly because it was played unhurriedly and had a lovely ending. This melted into 'Til I fell In Love With You.

“The band was excellent, with light touches on the acoustic numbers and came into their own on Stuck Inside of Mobile and HW61.

“Dylan tonight showed his capacity to deliver knock-out phrasing, especially on Man In The Long Black Coat and Desolation Row, whose lyrics had a new punch and vigour. Dylan used both songs to demonstrate just what he can do on the harmonica - a sheer delight.

“Inevitably, Summer Days signalled the end was in sight. The encore, Don’t Think Twice and Watchtower, were well-placed crowd pleasers. As the house lights came up, I felt ready for another hour or so. Sadly, it wasn't to be.”
