The first London show, tonight: “spellbinding”
Gerry Bamford, not a man given to hyperbole, reports that tonight’s London show – the first of five at Brixton Academy – was: “spellbinding”, “brilliant”, “fantastic” and “terrific”.
“The setlist – different again from last week’s shows – was a delight. The acoustic numbers, in particular, were performed beautifully, with rich subtlety. Dylan ventured centre stage to blow his harp several times.
"Setlist (the highlights are asterisked *)
Drifter’s Escape Senor God Knows To Ramona* It’s Alright, Ma... Queen Jane Approximately* 'Til I Fell In Love With You Stuck Inside Of Mobile... New Morning* H61R Man In The Long Black Coat Honest With Me Desolation Row* Summer Days Don’t Think Twice, It's All Right All Along The Watchtower
“Eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that Dylan opened and closed with compositions recorded by Jimi Hendrix; and some might remember that it’s Jimi’s birthday next Saturday, 26 November. Coincidence? Tribute?
“The packed crowd loved tonight’s show.”
So, the English leg of the 2005 Euro Tour is reaching the heights nightly. But, just when you thought you’d worked out the pattern of the gigs, Dylan – Mr Inscrutable - has changed the code again, making it impossible to predict what we’ll hear over the next few nights.
Watch The Dylan Daily this week for exclusive reports of the four remaining London shows.
