Restoration

The project has three main aims;

To save the Hall of Clestrain, built in 1769/70 - a lovely Georgian mansion which is A-listed, and desperately close to total dereliction.

To tell the story of John Rae, born and raised in the Hall, who discovered the fate of the Franklin Expedition, discovered the final link to the Northwest Passage in Canada, and designed the boat used in exploring great tracts of wilderness in Canada.

To save and allow interpretation of historic boats and the stories associated with them, together with other important sea-related narratives linked to Orkney's important maritime heritage.

It is planned to create a new pier/slipway at the site and to build a large new building within the Hall’s walled garden to accommodate historic boats. The Hall itself will contain museum galleries, a café, a gift shop, and a John Rae sitting room.

About BBC TWO Restoration

Vote Clestrain - BBC Restoration'Across the UK, thousands of historic buildings are in danger of being lost to the nation forever. This summer BBC TWO features a call to action in the fight to save our heritage.

With comedian and active conservationist Griff Rhys Jones at the helm, viewers will be asked to vote for and help save one of our 21 most endangered buildings.

Each programme will focus on three endangered properties in one area, then offer viewers the chance to vote for the building they would most like to see restored.

Each of the regional winners will go forward to the Live Final, a spectacular celebration of the nation's heritage, and the moment when one property is voted as the most worthy of Restoration.

Every historic building has a wealth of tales to tell, and, with the help of two experts, conservation architect Ptolemy Dean, and historic buildings surveyor Marianne Suhr, the series will bring the buildings back to life and depict them in their prime.'
