Open Day Art

At the Friends’ Open Day on 18th July 2004, children were invited to draw the Hall of Clestrain as it is now or as it was when it was lived in. The competition was judged by Trudi Hall of the Waterfront Gallery in Stromness. In a tough competition, the winner was from Kirkwall. The prizes were donated by local toy shop, Toymaster, in Kirkwall. Click on a thumbnail image below to view full size (in new pop-up window).

1st prize: Melanie Fleming (aged 10)
2nd prize: Morven Pennie (aged 4)

Melanie's drawing is also available as a Save Clestrain Desktop Wallpaper - check out our Downloads page

The rest of the entries:

Trudi said:
"There were at least half a dozen that showed good observation and delight in detail that I wish they could all be winners. And overall a most impressive amount of care taken with each depiction. I hope it will encourage a few future architects and restorationists."

Trudi awarded first prize to Melanie "for confident and accurate drawing together with interesting background features – a lot of inspired work." Morven won second prize "for sheer exuberance, delight in colour and composition."

Well done to Melanie and Morven. Thank you to all who entered.
