A Message from Hugh Halcro-Johnston

Hugh Halcro-Johnston - Chair of Directors, Orkney Boat Museum Ltd."My name is Hugh Halcro-Johnston and I have recently retired as convener (Chairman) of the Orkney Islands Council. I was asked by Ivan and Jean Craigie (owners of the Hall of Clestrain) to help them find a way to restore the old building. I contacted Steve Callaghan, the Council's Heritage officer, who told me of the search for a location to house the museum's collection of historic boats. This is how the project was conceived."

"I have known the old Hall since my childhood growing up in Orkney in the years following World War Two. I am directly descended from the Honeyman family who built the Hall. I was fascinated by the stories told of the pirate raid by the infamous Gow, the ghost stories connected with the old house and, of course, the exploits of John Rae who grew up there."

"John Rae was the first white man to lead an expedition into the Arctic in winter without food supplies - relying instead on links with the native Inuit peoples and his survival knowledge to sustain himself and his men. Rae is the only great British Arctic explorer never to be knighted and he’s been sadly neglected by history."

"This is a project which enjoys huge local support combining as it does the restoration of one of Scotland's most important buildings, long overdue recognition of Orkney's famous arctic explorer and a much desired visitor attraction. I believe it will attract a huge vote from all Orcadians here and abroad."
