"Unlike most people outwith Orkney I grew up learning about the achievements of John Rae and how he was so unfairly treated by the British establishment of his time. John Rae was a true Orkneyman. He had little time for the distinctions of race and class and was prepared to mix with and learn from the native people he found in Canada. This made him the most successful British arctic explorer ever. He mapped many thousands of miles of the arctic coastline, he brought back evidence of the final fate of the Franklin expedition and he found the last link in the famous Northwest Passage." "It is sad that the house where John Rae was born and which he knew and loved for all his early years has fallen into such disrepair. Many visitors to Orkney who have read about John Rae’s extraordinary exploits want to see the place where he grew up. Like me they want to see the house restored as a memorial to a remarkable man. We now have that opportunity. A vote for the Hall of Clestrain will be a vote for John Rae and a vote for fairness long overdue."
