The Hall of Clestrain / Orkney Boat Museum

Welcome to the Hall of Clestrain and Orkney Boat Museum website.

An exciting project to restore the Hall of Clestrain, Orphir, Orkney, and convert it into the Orkney Boat Museum.

The Hall of Clestrain in Orphir, Orkney [Location], was the birthplace of the famous Arctic explorer John Rae. Rae discovered the last link in the Northwest Passage and established what had happened to the Franklin Expedition (the British Naval Expedition led by Sir John Franklin in 1845), but was condemned by the establishment for reporting that the survivors of this Expedition had resorted to cannibalism.

The Hall of Clestrain in Orphir, Orkney, was one of the entries in BBC Restoration 2004, the TV competition where you vote for a property to be restored.

John Rae's memory will be honoured by the building of a boat museum and the restoration of the house where he was born and lived in as a child.

Our website will document the project to restore the Hall of Clestrain - and the development of Orkney Boat Museum. The website is still in its early days of development and it is hoped that over the coming weeks and months that we will be able to cover a number of topics in more depth, including boat-building in Orkney, the history of Orkney Skiffs and Yoles and more about the plans for the Boat Museum itself.

At the moment, find out the latest project news, view images of the Hall and other maritime related images of Orkney in our gallery - plus find out how to support the project.

Supported by Big Brother 2003 winner Cameron Stout and Mr George Marwick, Lord Lieutenant of Orkney as patrons, the Friends of Orkney Boat Museum will help progress the creation of the new museum.
